MG2 Series

UV Printer/Cutters — MG2-300 & MG2-640

Up to five layers in one pass

— a new 1.33 in., 300-npi printhead, single-pass multilayer printing and 1,000 ml ink pouches, with contour cutting and take-up built in.

The TrueVIS MG2 Series is Roland DG's new UV roll-to-roll print-and-cut platform. A new 1.33-inch, 300-npi printhead lifts throughput to 235.7 ft²/h without giving up TrueVIS gradients and detail, and single-pass multilayer printing lays down three to five layers of colour, white and gloss without pulling the media back. Ink comes in 1,000 ml pouches across four fixed configurations, maintenance is automated with a cloth wiper and dedicated cleaning liquid, and a 7-inch touchscreen and standard take-up unit round out the machine. Available in 30 in. and 64 in. widths.

Printhead

A new 1.33-inch, 300-npi printhead

The single new printhead packs more nozzles into a wider swath than the MG-640 it replaces, so it lays down more ink per pass. On the MG2-640 that means 110.9 ft²/h in the default CMYK mode, 156.1 ft²/h in production mode and 235.7 ft²/h in high-speed — while the smooth gradients, crisp detail and variable-dot quality TrueVIS is known for stay put.

Multilayer

Three to five layers in a single pass

Day/night window graphics, backlit prints and textured effects need colour, white and gloss stacked on top of one another. The MG2 prints up to five layers in one pass without pulling the media back between them, which keeps layer-to-layer registration tight and turns a fiddly workflow into one job in VersaWorks 7. Three-layer output runs at 25.8 ft²/h in standard mode on the MG2-640.

Ink

Four configurations, 1,000 ml pouches

EUV5EP ink comes in 1,000 ml pouches — twice the previous 500 ml format, so pouch changes are rarer and unattended runs are longer. Choose from four fixed configurations: CMYK with orange, red, white and gloss for the widest gamut and effects; CMYK with orange, red and double white for high-density white; CMYK with double white and double gloss for layered and textured work; or dual CMYK for maximum colour throughput.

Maintenance

Cloth wiper, cleaning liquid, cap-top shielding

An automatic cloth wiper lifts fine ink residue off the printhead more effectively than a conventional rubber blade, a dedicated cleaning liquid in a 500 ml pouch keeps the head and wiper clean as part of the automatic maintenance cycle, and a motor-controlled shield keeps stray UV light off the capping area. Together they cut routine operator intervention and help the printhead stay stable over time.

Operation

7-inch touchscreen with direct job printing

The touchscreen shows media, heater and ink status at a glance and puts nozzle checks, blade adjustment and take-up controls a tap away. Operators can also browse prepared VersaWorks 7 jobs, set a copy count and print straight from the panel without walking back to the RIP workstation — handy for repeat work.

Print & Cut

Contour cutting and take-up, both standard

The cutting carriage contour-cuts printed work on the same machine at 10 to 300 mm/s with 30 to 500 gf of blade force, so stickers, decals and labels are finished without a second device. The newly designed take-up unit ships as standard and works with both print-only and print-and-cut jobs, holding tension and alignment through long runs.

MG2-300

The 30 in. model. Takes media from 7.2 to 30 in. (182 to 762 mm) on rolls to 66 lb, and prints and cuts across 28.9 in. (736 mm). Measures 80.3 × 29.5 × 55.6 in., weighs 364 lb and draws about 550 W in operation on a 4.1/2.0 A supply — the one to choose where floor space or power is tight.

MG2-640

The 64 in. model. Takes media from 13.2 to 64 in. (335 to 1,625 mm) on rolls to 99 lb, and prints and cuts across 62.9 in. (1,600 mm) at up to 235.7 ft²/h in CMYK. Measures 114.3 × 29.5 × 55.6 in., weighs 463 lb and draws about 700 W in operation on a 5.3/2.7 A supply.

What the MG2 Series prints

UV print-and-cut on a roll — signage, stickers and decals, plus the day/night, backlit and textured work that layered white and gloss make possible.

A one-pass multilayer workflow

Roland DG Connect Designer, VersaWorks 7, and the BY2-20 work together as one connected design-to-print workflow.

Load and calibrate

Load the roll, set the media on the 7-inch touchscreen and let the front heater come up to 30 to 55 °C. The take-up unit is already fitted.

Build the layered job

In VersaWorks 7, compile the files into a layered job, tick One-Pass Multilayer Printing and set each layer to CMYK, white or gloss — up to five layers.

Print in one pass

The 300-npi printhead lays every layer in a single pass while the built-in UV-LED lamps cure it, so there is no media pullback and no registration drift.

Cut and wind

The cutting carriage contour-cuts the finished print at up to 300 mm/s, and the take-up unit winds it — take-up during cutting can be switched on from the panel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the MG2-300 and MG2-640?

Width, and with it roll capacity and power draw. The MG2-300 takes media to 30 in. on rolls to 66 lb and draws about 550 W; the MG2-640 takes media to 64 in. on rolls to 99 lb and draws about 700 W. Printhead, resolution, ink, multilayer printing, cutting and software are identical.

What is new compared to the MG-640?

A new 1.33-inch, 300-npi printhead in place of the previous generation; up to five layers in one pass without media pullback instead of the old layered workflow; 1,000 ml pouches for every colour rather than 500 ml (and 220 ml white); a take-up unit included rather than optional; an automated cloth wiper, dedicated cleaning liquid and cap-top UV protection; and a 7-inch touchscreen. Roland puts CMYK-to-white speed at 39.8 ft²/h against 17.2 ft²/h on the MG-640.

Which ink configuration should I choose?

The configuration is fixed at purchase, so it is worth deciding against your job mix. CMYK with orange, red, white and gloss covers the most ground — expanded gamut plus white and gloss effects. CMYK with orange, red and double white suits high-density white on dark or clear media. CMYK with double white and double gloss is the layered-effects set for day/night, backlit and textured work. Dual CMYK is for colour throughput above all.

How does single-pass multilayer printing work?

In VersaWorks 7 you compile the layer files into one layered job, switch on One-Pass Multilayer Printing and assign each layer to CMYK, white or gloss. The printer then lays every layer in a single pass — three to five layers — without pulling the media back, which is what keeps layer-to-layer registration tight.

How fast is it?

On the MG2-640 in CMYK: 110.9 ft²/h in the default standard mode, 156.1 ft²/h in production mode and 235.7 ft²/h in high-speed mode. Layered CMYKWhWhGlGl output runs 78.6 ft²/h for one layer, 39.8 ft²/h for two and 25.8 ft²/h for three. Roland has not yet published MG2-300 figures, and notes the MG2-640 data is preliminary.

Does it cut as well as print?

Yes — contour cutting runs on the same machine at 10 to 300 mm/s with blade force from 30 to 500 gf using a standard CAMM-1 series blade, and the included take-up unit can be set to keep winding during cutting.

Can I print without going back to the RIP computer?

Yes. From the touchscreen, operators can browse designated VersaWorks 7 folders, pick a prepared job, RIP and print it, or reprint an already-processed job with a new copy count. RIP-only processing still happens at the workstation.

What is Roland DG Connect?
